Motivation feels great – it’s like a whirlwind romance with your self-esteem when the world feels conquerable and writing unrealistic to-do lists seems like a stroke of genius. But just like any summer fling fading with your tan, it’s hard not to feel disheartened by the absence of motivation.

From my experience, motivation, like a summer romance, only seems to find you when you’re not looking for it – but, in the real world, waiting for that push is not a sustainable way to be productive. And while that spark might not always be there in the beginning, there are certain things you can do to set the scene to be whisked away by motivation;

Starting your mornings with something as simple as making your bed and having a shower can often be the kick start you need to get you ready for a productive day – try sticking to a routine during the working week and give yourself a well-deserved break on the weekend.

Confronting big end-goals can be overwhelming and can often lead to feeling demotivated. Setting smaller goals can help you feel a daily sense of accomplishment when working towards your weekly goal.

For many of us in this stage of life, the ultimate motivation is to land the dream job, so consciously acknowledging your work as part of the journey can help you push through down days and work productively towards your end goal. It’s important to remember that life is about the long-term romance, not the holiday fling.
